Thought For The Day

Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling.
–Margaret Lee Runbeck

I Have Been Thinking

One of the most difficult things to do is to overcome a fear of doing something – anything! Fear cannot be handled by rational thinking. Fear is irrational. Remember that. No matter how much we try to make sense of “irrational” the more complex it becomes. So how do we overcome a fear?

Dr Robert Schuller as I remember spoke of an acronym for FEAR “False Expectation Appearing Real” We expect things to happen that never do. What do you expect when you walk up to someone and start a conversation? Will they bite you? Will they make fun of you? Will they laugh at you? What do you expect? The opposite of fear is confidence.

Responses to Fear

Reaction is a choice. How can I say that? What do I know about fear? I was painfully shy. I was the child that hid behind mom and dad. I never spoke and often even when spoken to. In school, if anyone spoke to me, I always responded looking down at the floor, eye contact was next to impossible. Meeting strangers – talk about being afraid! Who would have ever guessed that I would ever be involved in sales? Who would have known that I could ever speak to an audience of one much less two or two hundred? It certainly wasn’t something I thought of. When I realized that what I wanted was not to be a sales person, but someone who was able to offer happiness to another I was hooked. I have always wanted to be a healer. My thoughts and aspirations lead to a career in nursing. Sales was still the farthest thing from my mind. Then somewhere along the line, money became an issue. I discovered that in sales I could earn more working 2 – 3 hours a week that I did in 40 hours a week in the hospital. I very much wanted to spend my hours with my girls, not working.

Very soon, my experience in sales helped me to become more and more comfortable with me. Remember, I have said many times, building a business is more about building you.

Change

Try something will you. Write your name with the hand you usually write with. It is totally comfortable, right? Now put the pen in your other hand and write your name. You do, you have to think very hard about every stroke. Overcoming fears means just doing it. Decide that you want to do … (you put the what in the sentence) close your eyes if you have to, then jump.

Some decisions have to be made. Even with networking it begins with deciding the ultimate goal. What are your expectations? What do you want from this relationship? What do you have to do in order to accomplish that end?

Just Do It

“Do the thing you fear most and the death of fear is certain.” – Mark Twain

This is probably one of my most favorite quotes there ever was. Nothing spoken was ever more true. You can slay your dragons. You can do anything you decide you want to do. Make the decision then no matter what, just do it. It doesn’t matter why you are afraid. All that matters is that you acknowledge the fear exists and that you refuse to let it consume you. You have to decide no matter how difficult it seems that you are bigger than the fear.

Ice Breakers

Family Bible

A little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination,
looking at the old pages as he turned them. Then something
fell out, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was
an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages.

“Momma, look what I found,” the boy called out.

“What have you got there, dear?” his mother asked.

With astonishment in the his voice, he answered, “It’s Adam’s Suit!”

Tip

Grandma Wisdom

It isn’t easy, but sometimes you just have to swallow that great big lump in your throat and just do the thing you fear. No, I didn’t just go from little miss hide in a box to speaker over night. It takes time. It takes practice. Just like writing with the other hand, the more you do it the easier it gets. What is it that really makes the difference? The one thing that makes the difference is believing in what you are doing.
