Thought For The Day

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.”
–Ralph Waldo Emerson

I Have Been Thinking

This does seem to be the rule of the day. It is odd now, to see someone without a cell phone texting or reading. If they don’t have the phone in their hand, they have a bluetooth in their ear. The technology has certainly captured the imagination and hearts of people all around the world. Each and every one of us has a desperate need to communicate. The truth is we like to have a dialog with people that have similar interests. We like to learn from those we feel know more than we do. There are a good many forms of communications and each has it’s place in modern every day life.

Phones

We like to talk to people one-on-one or even in a group. The telephone allowed that to happen. You can call anyone at almost anytime to talk and listen to another voice beside the one in your head. The phone was the first form of instant communication between two individuals. The telephone grew to include voice mail, caller ID and other features that assisted you in deciding from whom you wished to speak.

In the business world, the phone became a form of customer service – still is. In the attempt to handle call volume the automated machine was invented. Don’t you just hate to call a business and hear, “if you want to speak to … press 1” then it seems that you get on some kind of a merry-go-round until you finally reach the person you want to talk to. It seems that support phone calls are the least important and take the longest time to get through. Maybe it only seems that way because of my own impatience.

The one and only one thing that does in fact upset me is people who say they want to be in business or are in business, but cannot or will not allow you to reach them by phone.

The expense in a telephone for long distance was once a nightmare. The cell phone is still pay by the minute or by the service. VOIP came along and now connecting through the computer is great when running a business. Skype phones can cost as little as $30.00 a year and they work great. Vonage is another VOIP that has entered the world of the telephone that has made it very affordable to call all around the world.

Tablets

Books are being replaced by tablets and other techie devices. Digital books and newsletters are replacing paper. Most every city in the world had one or more newspapers, but now if they have one it is almost too many. Most get the news on television, radio, their laptop or other versions of the technology. There is one commercial on television that I like to point to. It is one for the Kindle. The commercial shows how difficult it is to carry and store even one book and a newspaper with you, then shows how much can be stored in a Kindle. Pretty amazing isn’t it?

Because it is so much easier to get published on the web and with digital books and newsletters, the would be writer has many avenues he can explore to publish. Even Amazon.com has the S3 resource for uploading and having a delivery system for digital books.

The Internet

The internet and growth of the internet has made possible a good many people to develop and grow their interest in the technology and of course how to use it. Because so many people are mobile, now it is not only important to design sites for the web that are esthetic, easy to navigate and helpful it is also important to design them so they are available to anyone on any size screen.

The internet also makes it possible to connect with and speak to people all over the planet. As a result, we need to be aware of the different cultures and how to communicate in a way that our message is easily accepted globally.

Amazing Memory

One day a guy on a vacation heard of an Indian with an
amazing memory, so he decided to visit the Indian and see
what the big deal was.

He went to the Indian and asked him, “What did you eat for
breakfast on July 2, 1961?”

The Indian replied, “Eggs.”

The same man came back 10 years later to see the Indian
again. He greeted him by saying, “How.”

The Indian said, “Fried.”

Tip

Grandma Wisdom

I mentioned the Golden Rule, I don’t know if there is a rule about communications, but always think first about the end result. What do you really want to get out of the conversation whether it be on the phone or written somewhere on the internet. If you want to be well thought of, don’t use slang except with close friends. Watch profanity no matter what technology you are using. Don’t write anything you don’t want repeated. Once the written word has spread on the Internet, there is no way to ever take it back.
