Thought For The Day

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try one more time.”
  Thomas Edison
1847-1931, Inventor and Entrepreneur

I Have Been Thinking

What to say and how do I say it? One of the most difficult things to do is to write to people you don’t know at all, but hey you are not supposed to be writing to strangers are you? You have done your homework and know your target market as well as you know your best friend. If you don’t know or have not identified your very special potential friends, then better back up and do that first.

Demographics are the only way I know to write “relevant” letters that will reach those you need and want to talk with. There are a few questions to ask yourself before you go looking for prospects for your business. There are two basic qualifications:

  1. Are they looking for your product or service and
  2. Do they have the money to spend

How can you find the answers to those questions? Again you have to know who you may be looking for first.

What is a demographic in the first place? They refer to statistical data of a population, including sex, average age, income, education, field of interest etc.

What Should I Say

The first rule is to be personal. Talk to people just like you do your friends. Matter of fact the people you contact might end up being one of your very best friends. It is absolutely true, you cannot be everything to everybody, but you can be just what that one person reading your letter is looking for right at the very minute he or she is looking for a solution to THE BENEFITS OF YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE. Contrary to some beliefs it is absolutely OK to talk about your product or service, just be sure to talk about it in his shoes not yours. You know why you and your product is great, but unless you can make it their solution, the very thing they need to solve the problem – delete!

“Curiosity is powerful and hypnotic.” Go turn on the television. Watch the trailers for the movies to be released soon. What do they build on? Curiosity that’s what. Really look, really watch and really listen until you can see, feel and hear how they build on the curiosity. Then write down the words they use.

Use your keyword, an action word and the words that build on your potential customer’s curiosity in your title. Personalize the title in your autoresponder.

Ask Questions

“Can you help me? Do you know anyone who wants TALK ABOUT THE BENEFIT OF YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE?”

“Our job is to talk directly to the decision-making part of the brain, and to use specific “commercial talking” word phrases to get our message inside of our prospects’ minds.” – Al Schreiter

Give people a reason to give you information Online this is traditionally a free eBook, report or bit of software.

“Please leave a telephone number and the best time to call you back. I’ll call back and ask you which free samples you would prefer from our product line.”

Keep your messages short, sweet and to the point. Again remember AIDA.

So where can I find “hot” prospects?

Based on your keywords and demographics you can find the people you are looking for in forums and groups. Check back at the lab and pick up the Networking eBook. There is also the INL-Listbuilding course where you can get tips and strategies for building and growing your lists.

Ice Breakers

The Hamster

A young man was working at a pet store that
offered free replacement fish to any that die.

A lady called and stated that her hamster had died.

The salesperson who answered the phone misunderstood her,
thinking it was a fish, told her to place it in a plastic bag
with water and return it so it could be replaced.

The lady followed instructions to a “T” and brought her
dead hamster in a bag of water and handed to
the young man and said “my hamster died.

” Laughing he replied “Was that before or after you placed it in the
bag of water?”

He was fired for not showing sympathy to a customer!

Tip

Grandma Wisdom

When people are looking for answers to a problem and you know You Are The Solution, then nothing speaks volumes more than I know this is how you feel and this is why I am your solution. It can be done without sounding like a sales person or as the Bible put it “as tinkling brass” but as a friend. You caring can show through if you let it.
