The Team, The Symphony

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

Give it to a committee and nothing gets done.

Work your project with a team and together everyone accomplishes more. So I had someone ask me, what is the difference. Believe me, there is a big difference.

In a committee, at least any that I have ever had to evaluate for their effectiveness, it became quite apparent that 20% of the people do 80% of the work.

In a team atmosphere, the project is divided into modules. Each member of the team is assigned a module to complete then they are given the time they need to complete their module.

In the labs soon to be offered in the Internet Niche Lab, our teams will be creating new info products on a monthly or weekly basis. They will be taught to use the tools in webinars, then when their experience is such that they can participate in a lab they will be invited to participate.

There will never be more than ten members in a lab with a lab facilitator making number eleven. They work together to do the market research, to decide on the project, then each is given an exact module to get done. Pretty cool to see the completed results. It’s more like watching an exciting football or basketball game.

Many people have expressed that coming up with their own unique product alone is a scary thing to do and yes the first time it can be. There are a lot of pieces and parts to put together. The isolation and loneliness in getting the product completed can lead to being easily distracted by anything and everything that comes along. I am sure you know what I mean.

The process is an easy one when the team works together. The captain or facilitator oversees what the team does, while each team member plays his role.

My experience was not in football or basketball but in the symphony. When every member plays his part well the resulting music is a joy to listen to. It takes practice for that group to play well together. Our Niche labs become our symphony.

Tips and Techniques

Do you have the skill to work with a group? If you are going to be or are planning to be a leader then working with a team is a skill you had better get very good at.

The lab is one place where you can hone in this skill and practice it until it becomes second nature.

Happy designing!
